Domaine des Cèdres
-- Domaine des Cèdres is located in a small commune in France's Southern Rhône Valley. Often called a "Blessed Region," the Rhône Valley is in a climate that is ideal for grape growing. The vineyard features several plots on hillsides which have a stony, clayey and calcareous soil which are friendly to vines and little else. The stones absorb the hot summer sun and then reflect warmth onto the vines at night. The climate is Mediterranean, although the Mistral, a cold northerly wind that can endure for days on end, is a feature of the Southern Rhône. The dry Mistral winds, however, minimize vine disease and dry out the vineyard if hit with summer rains.Domaine des Cèdres winemaker, Dominique Pons, is a true pioneer of organic viticulture. He has been into organic winemaking for at least 20 years, and was one of the first in the Côtes-du-Rhône AOC to go organic. Coteaux du Languedoc
Château Véronique
-- Véronique Raskin's family started growing grapes in the south of France in the late 1700's. Grapes led to wine, and their 50 acre family estate, Château Bousquette, in the South of France, became a working winery soon thereafter. Still, it wasn't until 1993 that Véronique's brother and Bousquette's winemaker, decided to bottle a wine in honor of Véronique's pioneering efforts to promote organically grown wine in the United States."Bousquette" (pronounced boo-sket) in French means thicket or grove. The word aptly describes the property: a simple family estate nestled in pine trees, lavender and thyme, overlooking miles of vineyards stretching all the way to the foot of the volcanic mountains, the Cévennes. The vineyards are moderated by the cooling breezes from the sea, giving the grapes a long, even growing season. The result is Château Véronique, a dry, medium-bodied wine with a jammy fruit character of cherry, plum and blackberry complemented by aromas of straw and oak.AOC Coteaux du Languedoc . . .

-- Château de Boisfranc is located on the plateau of Jarnioux in the heart of the Beaujolais region of Eastern France. Here, the Gamay grape reigns supreme. It is made into a popular "nouveau" wine each November and flown quickly to the U.S. for celebrations around Thanksgiving. In France, the region's nouveau wine traditionally was shipped to Paris bistros each fall, where it was enjoyed as a light quaffing wine to celebrate the new vintage.Gamay's ripe, sensuous fruit flavors make it an ideal nouveau wine, but it also can be made into a heartier springtime wine to enjoy for 1-2 years after bottling, when it is at its peak of freshness and flavor.Thierry Doat has taken over this estate from his father Robert. Both men began conversion to organic agriculture in 1982. Today, the estate vineyards carry the certification of Biofranc and Ecocert, two French organizations that support organic farmers.Château de Boisfranc's vines are close to 60 years old and produce less than younger vines, but . . .

NO ADDED SULFITES RED!
-- Back in January, in the French town of Narbonne, we met (my dear friend and assistant Claudia, our partner Paul Chartrand and myself) with Didier Cabannes, a local winemaker. This simple presentation around a table and a few glasses ended up lasting 2 hours such was the interest this man and his wines generated! First, let me tell you that Didier does not go around unnoticed! Massive, solidly planted, with powerful hands, a good smile and a strong regional accent, you’re bound to remember the encounter! To begin with, Didier is a healer, and not one sanctioned by a diploma but one who has so much energy in his hands that he HAS to offer it to the people he is drawn to! This side of his personality alone was worth the meeting but then he went on to explain how he brought to his vineyard his exceptional perception of energy in living things. How he takes every conceivable step from the ground up to end up with wines that have a rare flavor of authenticity! This was a fascinating discussion . . .

-- Established in 1920, the Boudon vineyard lies in the Entre-Deux-Mers region, 25 km S.E. of Bordeaux, and covers 62.5 acres - 35 acres producing grape varieties: Sauvignon, Semillon, Muscadelle, and Ugni-Blanc for white wines. Since 1963 the vineyard has practiced organic farming, following the strict methods and rules defined by the BIOFRANC organic association. Thus, all of their vines are cultivated without chemical fertilizers, weed-killers, insecticides or artificial fungicides. Only organic compost of animal or vegetable origin, and natural insoluble minerals, are added to the land. Why such a choice? Patrick and Maryse Boudon, a couple with a combined total of 70 years’ winegrowing experience, explain: “We believe that wine can only be as good as the grape from which it is made, and the quality of the grape depends solely upon the husbandry devoted to it and the soil from which it stems. Côte Chalonnaise now merits its own appellation to distinguish these wines from other Burgundys. Its reds are renowned for ripe fruit and drinkability compared to more tannic and concentrated reds from the areas further north around Beaune. The Chaumont eight acre estate is quite small, like many local vineyards. Guy took over seventeen years ago from his father, who had converted to organic growing ten years earlier out of concern for the family’s health. Their vineyard is certified organic by Ecocert, one of the French certifying agencies. Grapes are fertilized and protected from pests naturally, without synthetic chemical sprays.Smooth, fruity and aromatic. Aged in new & old oak after pressing. -- 500 cases made. Casina di Cornia is a small estate situated in the heart of the Tuscan hills of Italy. The vineyards exposed to the southwest are planted with the grape varieties of the Chianti: Sangiovese & Canaiolo for the red wine, and Trebbiano & Malvasia for the white.Since 1980, the estate has been cultivated according to the methods of organic agriculture. In order for the wine to maintain its genuine quality and perfume, intervention on the grapes and wine are kept to a minimum. This begins with a pruning policy which reduces the average yield to just 50hl/hectare. During harvest, in order to avoid bruising the fruit, grapes are collected by hand in small crates. In the cellar, the vinification is conducted with accurate control of temperature and oxidation. For the past 12 years, Casina di Cornia has been a member of ECOCERT, an independent organic certification agency. Hot Year, Hot Wine!
-- Pierre André and his daughter continue a family tradition of producing powerful red wines from their thirty six acres of vines in Courthezon, between Orange and Avignon in southern France. Organic agriculture is another tradition in this family, who began using these methods in 1963 and converted fully in 1980. They have also practiced biodynamic viticulture, and have been certified biodynamic by Demeter since 1990. Wines from Châteauneuf-du-Pape are made from a blend of up to thirteen grape varieties. The André wine blends major elements of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre with smaller amounts of Cinsault, Counoise, Picpoul, and Muscardin. Their vines average 60 years old with some parcels exceeding 100 years! Diverse soil types and a southern exposure give these vines excellent conditions for production of balanced, healthy wines that will develop for many years after the harvest. The 2000 vintage invites you to travel through layers upon layers of gustatory revelations.
