Casina Di Cornia
Outstanding! 86 Pts
-- $32.99
-- 500 cases made.
Casina di Cornia is a small estate situated in the heart of the Tuscan hills of Italy. The vineyards exposed to the southwest are planted with the grape varieties of the Chianti: Sangiovese & Canaiolo for the red wine, and Trebbiano & Malvasia for the white.Since 1980, the estate has been cultivated according to the methods of organic agriculture. In order for the wine to maintain its genuine quality and perfume, intervention on the grapes and wine are kept to a minimum. This begins with a pruning policy which reduces the average yield to just 50hl/hectare. During harvest, in order to avoid bruising the fruit, grapes are collected by hand in small crates. In the cellar, the vinification is conducted with accurate control of temperature and oxidation. For the past 12 years, Casina di Cornia has been a member of ECOCERT, an independent organic certification agency. In addition, the estate co-founded “Coordinamento Toscano Produttori Biologici,” an Italian cooperative of . . .

Pierre André
What a Vintage!
-- $69.99
-- Pierre André and his daughter continue a family tradition of producing powerful red wines from their thirty six acres of vines in Courthezon, between Orange and Avignon in southern France. Organic agriculture is another tradition in this family, who began using these methods in 1963 and converted fully in 1980. They have also practiced biodynamic viticulture, and have been certified biodynamic by Demeter since 1990. Wines from Châteauneuf-du-Pape are made from a blend of up to thirteen grape varieties. The André wine blends major elements of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre with smaller amounts of Cinsault, Counoise, Picpoul, and Muscardin. Their vines average 60 years old with some parcels exceeding 100 years! Diverse soil types and a southern exposure give these vines excellent conditions for production of balanced, healthy wines that will develop for many years after the harvest. The 2000 vintage invites you to travel through layers upon layers of gustatory revelations. Magister Bibendi
Navarrsotillo
-- $24.99
-- Made from a special selection of older vines and matured in american and french oak for 4-6 mos, this wine displays deep cherry hues with hints of burgundy. A complex aroma of red fruits with a bit of licorice influence from oak aging, it is excellent and smooth on the palate. A more serious red than the younger and simpler Noemus from this pioneer organic winery in Rioja. Spain deserves some recognition for a long tradition of heart warming wines now elaborated in high tech facilities. The result is convincing. If you have a chance, go visit the Bodegas Navarsotillo, you will be greeted by big smiles and open hearts, and ...lots of wines to taste! What a treat!DOC Rioja

Château Bousquette
The Original is still quicking!
-- $19.99
-- The vineyards of Château Bousquette, a 50 acre family estate, drape over the craggy hillsides of a small town called Cessenon, only 30 miles inland from the Mediterranean in the South of France. "Bousquette" (pronounced boo-sket) in French means thicket or grove. The word aptly describes the property: a simple family estate nestled in pine trees, lavender and thyme, overlooking miles of vineyards stretching all the way to the foot of the volcanic mountains, the Cévennes. The vineyards are moderated by the cooling breezes from the sea, giving the grapes a long, even growing season. After a 10 day maceration period, the new wine is racked and pressed into large barrels and aged for about 18 months. The result is a dry, Rhône-style wine that is typical of southern France. Aromas of berry, leather and spice. Very smooth and mouth-filling flavors of ripe plums and black cherry fruit. Warm tannins and a lingering, smooth finish.AOC Saint-Chinian; 35% Grenache, 30% Carignan, 20% Syrah, 15% Mourvedre.

Château Moulin de Peyronin
Cuvée Capucine
-- $19.99
-- Bordeaux produces some of the finest red wines in the world. This classic red wine comes from the commune of Pujols, in the eastern part of Bordeaux. Françoise Frelin is a central figure in French organic viticulture. Her family has owned Château du Moulin de Peyronin since 1974, though they pioneered the sustainable agriculture movement as early as 1966 in their other vineyards. This wine is a blend from selected grapes aged in oak barrels for about a year. Madame Frelin, one of the fairly few women winemakers, oversees the maturing of her "baby" and the result is charming! The tannins are silky, the oak is discreet, the fruit is enhanced by the aging. Good job, Madam!
